Smith Machine Overhead Press

A standing or seated shoulder press on a Smith machine, using the fixed bar path to press safely overhead without needing a spotter.

Equipment: Smith machine

How to do it

  1. 1Stand or sit facing the Smith machine bar, set at roughly upper-chest height, and grip it slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  2. 2Unrack the bar by rotating it out of the hooks and brace your core.
  3. 3Press the bar straight up until your arms are extended.
  4. 4Lower back down under control to the starting position, then re-rack at the end of your set.

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back excessively to help press the weight up.
  • Standing too far forward or back from the bar's fixed path, which creates an awkward pressing angle.
