Machine Shoulder Press

A guided-path shoulder press machine that builds pressing strength for the shoulders with a fixed, stable path, reducing the balance and coordination demand of a free-weight overhead press.

Equipment: Gym machines (leg press, leg extension, etc.)

How to do it

  1. 1Sit in the machine with your back against the pad and grip the handles at roughly shoulder height.
  2. 2Press the handles straight up until your arms are extended, without locking your elbows out forcefully.
  3. 3Pause briefly at the top.
  4. 4Lower the handles back under control to the starting position.

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back excessively to help drive the weight up.
  • Setting the seat too low, which forces an uncomfortable, restricted range of motion at the shoulder.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Machine Shoulder Press safe for beginners?

Yes. The Machine Shoulder Press is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.

What muscles does the Machine Shoulder Press work?

The primary mover is your shoulders. As a push movement, it also involves your triceps and upper chest.

What can I substitute if I don't have machines for the Machine Shoulder Press?

The Overhead Barbell Press targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have machines available.
