Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise

A seated calf isolation exercise performed with a dumbbell resting on the knee to target the soleus muscle.

Equipment: Dumbbells, Bench

How to do it

  1. 1Sit on the edge of a bench with knees bent to about 90 degrees and the balls of your feet on a raised block or plate, letting your heels hang off the edge.
  2. 2Place a dumbbell upright on each knee, or one dumbbell on the working knee, and hold it steady with your hands.
  3. 3Let your heels drop as low as your range allows to fully stretch your calves at the bottom.
  4. 4Push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible, squeezing your calves hard at the top before lowering back down under control.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing at the bottom of the movement instead of controlling the stretch.
  • Using a partial range of motion instead of lowering fully and rising all the way onto the toes.

Is the Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise safe for beginners?

Yes. The Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.

What muscles does the Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise work?

The primary mover is your calves. As a legs movement, it also involves very little else — it's mostly an isolated calf movement.

What can I substitute if I don't have dumbbells or bench for the Seated Dumbbell Calf Raise?

The Bodyweight Calf Raise targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have dumbbells or bench available.
