Bodyweight Calf Raise

A bodyweight calf isolation exercise.

Equipment: bodyweight

How to do it

  1. 1Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding onto something for balance if needed.
  2. 2Rise up onto the balls of your feet as high as possible.
  3. 3Lower back down with control until your heels touch the floor.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing at the bottom instead of controlling the descent.
  • Rushing through reps instead of pausing briefly at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bodyweight Calf Raise safe for beginners?

Yes. The Bodyweight Calf Raise is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.

What muscles does the Bodyweight Calf Raise work?

The primary mover is your calves. As a legs movement, it also involves very little else — it's mostly an isolated calf movement.

How do I make the Bodyweight Calf Raise harder as I get stronger?

Since this is a bodyweight movement, progress by adding reps or sets before anything else, slowing the tempo down (especially the lowering portion), or shortening rest between sets. Once bodyweight reps stop feeling challenging, that's usually the sign to add external load or move to a more advanced variation.
