Resistance Band Lateral Walk

A glute activation exercise using a mini resistance band around the legs, commonly used as a warm-up before lower-body training or as light glute accessory work.

Equipment: Resistance bands

How to do it

  1. 1Place a resistance band around your legs, either above the knees or around the ankles, and stand with feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2Bend your knees slightly into a quarter-squat position.
  3. 3Step sideways with control, keeping tension on the band throughout.
  4. 4Take a set number of steps in one direction, then repeat in the other direction.

Common mistakes

  • Standing too upright instead of maintaining a slight knee bend throughout the movement.
  • Letting the feet turn outward instead of keeping the toes pointed forward.

What muscles does the Resistance Band Lateral Walk work?

The primary mover is your glutes. As a legs movement, it also involves your hamstrings and lower back.

What can I substitute if I don't have resistance-bands for the Resistance Band Lateral Walk?

The Kettlebell Swing targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have resistance-bands available.
