Kettlebell Row

A single-arm kettlebell row that builds back strength with minimal equipment.

Equipment: Kettlebell

How to do it

  1. 1Hinge at the hips with a flat back, holding the kettlebell in one hand with the other hand braced on a bench or your thigh.
  2. 2Pull the kettlebell toward your hip, keeping your elbow close to your body.
  3. 3Lower it back to a full stretch with control, then repeat before switching sides.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the back instead of holding a flat hinge position.
  • Rotating the torso to help lift the weight.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kettlebell Row safe for beginners?

Yes. The Kettlebell Row is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.

What muscles does the Kettlebell Row work?

The primary mover is your back. As a pull movement, it also involves your biceps and rear shoulders.

What can I substitute if I don't have kettlebell for the Kettlebell Row?

The Pull-Up targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have kettlebell available.
