Barbell Lunge

A loaded lunge variation with a barbell across the upper back, adding more resistance than a dumbbell or bodyweight lunge once those feel too light.

Equipment: Barbell

How to do it

  1. 1Position a barbell across your upper back as you would for a squat, standing with feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2Step forward with one leg and lower your hips until both knees are bent to roughly 90 degrees.
  3. 3Keep your front knee tracking over your ankle and your torso upright.
  4. 4Push through your front foot to return to standing, then repeat on the other side.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a step that's too short, which pushes the front knee too far forward over the toes.
  • Losing balance under load by stepping onto an uneven or unstable base.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Barbell Lunge safe for beginners?

The Barbell Lunge is tagged intermediate, meaning it generally works best once you already have some legs training experience. If you're new to training, building a base with the Goblet Squat first is a reasonable place to start.

What muscles does the Barbell Lunge work?

The primary mover is your quads. As a legs movement, it also involves your glutes and hamstrings.

What can I substitute if I don't have barbell for the Barbell Lunge?

The Goblet Squat targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have barbell available.
