Medicine Ball Sit-Up

A weighted sit-up variation using an overhead medicine ball to add resistance to a full sit-up.

Equipment: Medicine ball

How to do it

  1. 1Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, holding a medicine ball with both hands extended straight overhead.
  2. 2Brace your core and curl your torso up off the floor, keeping the ball extended in line with your ears as you rise.
  3. 3Continue until your torso is vertical or nearly vertical, pausing briefly at the top.
  4. 4Lower back down under control, keeping tension in your abs the whole way.

Common mistakes

  • Using the arms to fling the ball forward for momentum instead of driving the movement from the abs.
  • Yanking the torso up quickly instead of curling up under control, which increases strain on the lower back.

What can I substitute if I don't have medicine-ball for the Medicine Ball Sit-Up?

The Plank targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have medicine-ball available.
