Farmer's Carry
A loaded carrying exercise that builds grip strength, core stability, and overall work capacity by simply walking while holding heavy weights.
Equipment: Dumbbells
How to do it
- 1Pick up a heavy dumbbell in each hand, keeping your chest up and shoulders back.
- 2Walk forward for a set distance or time, keeping your core braced and your stride controlled.
- 3Keep the dumbbells at your sides without letting them swing.
- 4Set the weights down under control at the end of the carry.
Common mistakes
- Letting the shoulders round forward or shrug up toward the ears instead of staying set and stable.
- Rushing the walk with an uneven stride instead of moving at a controlled, steady pace.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Farmer's Carry safe for beginners?
Yes. The Farmer's Carry is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.
What muscles does the Farmer's Carry work?
The primary mover is your core. As a core movement, it also involves your hip flexors and lower-back stabilizers.
What can I substitute if I don't have dumbbells for the Farmer's Carry?
The Plank targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have dumbbells available.
