Decline Barbell Bench Press
A bench press variation performed on a decline bench that shifts more emphasis onto the lower chest.
How to do it
- 1Set the bench to a slight decline and hook your feet under the pads, keeping your back and shoulders flat against the bench.
- 2Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width and unrack it, holding it directly above your lower chest with arms extended.
- 3Lower the bar under control to your lower chest, keeping your elbows at roughly a 45-degree angle to your torso.
- 4Press the bar back up to full extension, squeezing your chest at the top.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing the bar off the chest to help drive it back up, which increases injury risk and reduces muscle tension.
- Letting the feet slip or the hips shift on the decline bench, which breaks the stable base needed to press safely.
