Assisted Pull-Up Machine
A machine that counterbalances part of your bodyweight, letting you build toward a full pull-up with reduced resistance, a common starting point for beginners.
Equipment: Gym machines (leg press, leg extension, etc.)
How to do it
- 1Kneel or step onto the machine's platform and grip the handles above you, shoulder-width or slightly wider.
- 2Select an assistance level that lets you complete your target reps with real effort.
- 3Pull your chin up to the level of the handles, driving your elbows down and back.
- 4Lower back down under control to full arm extension.
Common mistakes
- Setting the assistance too high, which removes so much resistance that the exercise stops building real pulling strength.
- Using momentum from the platform to bounce into each rep instead of a controlled pull.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Assisted Pull-Up Machine safe for beginners?
Yes. The Assisted Pull-Up Machine is tagged as beginner-friendly in GetFitArchitect's exercise database, meaning it doesn't demand much prior strength or mobility. Start with a weight or resistance level where you can complete every rep with good form, and only add load once that feels controlled.
What muscles does the Assisted Pull-Up Machine work?
The primary mover is your back. As a pull movement, it also involves your biceps and rear shoulders.
What can I substitute if I don't have machines for the Assisted Pull-Up Machine?
The Pull-Up targets the same primary muscle with different equipment, so it's a reasonable swap if you don't have machines available.
